Emaciated bodies and sunken eyes: Gaza’s children are the first victims of famine

In the alleys of the Gaza Strip, reduced to rubble, amidst the destroyed homes and overcrowded shelters, a human tragedy unfolds beyond all bounds of tolerance, a tragedy whose price is being paid by the most vulnerable: the children of the Strip.

After two months of a complete Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid flows, the fabric of life is gradually collapsing, and famine looms as a reality, not an improbable possibility.

In a hospital in Gaza City, four-month-old Jenan Al-Skafi died after suffering from malnutrition.

Her mother says she weighed no more than 2.8 kilograms, and that she was unable to secure milk or essential medication due to a near-total shortage of basic necessities.

Janan’s case was not unique; it was one of a growing number of children in Gaza dying from hunger and lack of healthcare.

In another neighborhood of the city, 12-year-old Rahaf lies exhausted from hunger and malnutrition, unable to get out of bed.

Her mother, Shorouk Ayad, stares at her helpless face and says in a broken voice, “My daughter is dying before my eyes, and I can’t do anything for her. No medicine, no food, not even water.” Rahaf’s case has become a painful embodiment of the lives of thousands of families in the Gaza Strip, where mothers no longer have anything to protect their children from a slow death.
