Israeli advances toward the heart of Gaza City amid communications blackout
Yesterday (Thursday), Israeli aircraft intensified their violent raids on Gaza City, coinciding with a gradual ground incursion by tanks into several areas within the city. This led to a complete disruption of communications and internet services and an increase in waves of displacement of residents amid catastrophic conditions.
Eyewitnesses reported that Israeli forces advanced from four main directions. Tanks were seen in the northern direction of the city at the Jalaa Junction (known as the “rocket roundabout”), in the eastern direction around the Sheikh Radwan pond, where they were positioned inside schools west of the pond, and in the northwest inside the Al-Karama neighborhood. Other forces advanced in the southern direction at the Dahdouh Junction on Street 8 and around the university college.
Witnesses explained that the Israeli advance appeared to be relatively faster in the northern and northwestern directions, while the army was advancing slightly slower in the eastern and southern directions.
Abdul Salam Al-Dahdouh, a 32-year-old resident of central Gaza City, said via an alternative SIM card that “internet and communication outages are usually an indication that something serious is about to happen.”
He added, “The situation is extremely difficult in Gaza, and people are in a constant state of fear, especially with the escalation of airstrikes everywhere.” He noted that the situation becomes more difficult at night, when “everyone feels their turn to die has come, especially since we don’t know where they are bombing. We just hear the sounds of terrifying explosions everywhere.”
