Adnan Abu Hasna, spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said that the situation in the Gaza Strip has reached an extremely dangerous stage, stressing that the Strip requires massive humanitarian efforts to restore normalcy.
Abu Hasna explained that Gaza’s infrastructure has suffered widespread destruction, exceeding 80%, noting that if Israeli military operations had continued at the same pace, the Strip would have been completely destroyed.
He pointed out that the current situation in Gaza resembles a “tsunami,” describing the scene as “post-disaster.” He emphasized the urgent need to expedite the entry of humanitarian aid, especially medicines and medical equipment, to avoid a complete collapse of the health system.
The UNRWA spokesperson noted that 90% of the Gaza Strip’s population suffers from malnutrition, emphasizing that approximately 100,000 children have entered Phase 5 of food insecurity, which, according to international standards, is classified as “death or permanent physical and psychological scarring.”
Abu Hasna emphasized that what the Gaza Strip is currently experiencing is comparable to what happened in areas such as Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Somalia during periods of major famine, considering that the situation has reached the highest levels of the phased classification of food insecurity.
He continued: “We are facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, and every day of delay in the entry of aid means more lives are at risk, especially among children and women.” He called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and act immediately to save what can be saved.
