UNICEF: Children’s suffering in Gaza continues despite the ceasefire

UNICEF spokesperson in Palestine, Kazem Abu Khalaf, stated that children in the Gaza Strip continue to suffer the effects of the attacks and the blockade, despite the ceasefire announcement.

In a press statement, Abu Khalaf explained that children in Gaza continue to die due to harsh weather conditions, ongoing attacks, and malnutrition.

He emphasized that the situation in Gaza remains extremely difficult, and that the Israeli attacks on the Strip have caused immense suffering for the population, especially children. He said, “Since October 2023, Gaza has been subjected to several brutal and complex attacks that have left the population with nothing.”

Abu Khalaf pointed out that the Israeli attacks have caused severe harm to children, resulting in the deaths of more than 80 children even after the ceasefire was declared.

He added, “Children are also suffering from the cold weather, with temperatures dropping sharply. We have received reports that tents have been flooded. Despite the efforts of UNICEF and other humanitarian organizations to provide aid, the situation remains dire.”

Abu Khalaf explained that the recent attacks have had a devastating impact on children in Gaza, with many losing limbs or family members.

He also reported that more than 638,000 school-aged children have missed two full academic years due to the security and humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

Abu Khalaf added that more than 20,000 children have been killed in the Israeli attacks, while more than 44,000 have been injured. He emphasized that children in Gaza are suffering not only physically, but also psychologically and mentally.

He said, “Thousands of children have been orphaned, and thousands more have lost limbs. All children in Gaza, who make up half the population of the Strip, need psychological and social support.”

He also pointed out that the health situation in Gaza is extremely dire, with only 18 of the 36 hospitals in the Strip partially operational.

He added that there is an urgent need to evacuate injured children who require medical treatment abroad.
