UNRWA: Gaza Strip is experiencing an unprecedented “humanitarian tsunami.”

Adnan Abu Hasna, the media advisor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), confirmed that what the Gaza Strip is witnessing is an “unprecedented humanitarian tsunami” as a result of the policies of the Israeli occupation.

Abu Hasna explained, in a press statement on Wednesday, that Israel imposes effective control over approximately 86% of the area of the Strip through direct occupation, evacuation orders, and transforming areas into dangerous areas. This makes it bear full responsibility before the international community for the lives of more than two million people, including basic services such as health, education, water, electricity, communications, and even waste collection.

Abu Hasna described the famine striking Gaza as an “artificial famine” resulting from a political decision taken by the Israeli government on March 2, when it prevented the entry of food, medicine, and fuel. He warned that any attempts to push Palestinians toward displacement or exodus southward are a clear violation of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions, and the UN Charter.

He pointed out that the occupation is seeking to liquidate UNRWA as part of a plan to liquidate the Palestinian refugee issue and abort any prospect of a political solution based on the two-state solution, stressing that the agency will continue its work despite all the targeting.

Abu Hasna added that UNRWA provided health services to approximately 1.5 million patients between March and July, with a daily average of 18,000 patients. Thousands of employees continue to work in the fields of psychological support, shelter, water distribution, and waste collection, he explained.

He explained that what the agency is currently doing is not improving the quality of life, but rather keeping people alive in their homeland. Abu Hasna concluded by emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire and ensuring the entry of all humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip to save the lives of civilians and protect their basic rights.
