Human rights organization: 98 Palestinians killed in Israeli detention centers

Physicians for Human Rights-Israel said on Monday that at least 98 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention facilities since the start of the war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, adding that they were subjected to torture and medical neglect, and calling for an international investigation.

A report by the organization, titled “Death Sentence for Palestinians in Detention Centers,” stated that at least 46 of them died in facilities run by the Israel Prison Service, and another 52 died in military detention centers, all of them from the Gaza Strip.

The report stated that this mistreatment continued despite the ceasefire in Gaza declared last month. The organization, founded by Israeli doctors, described the number as unprecedented and said the actual figure is likely even higher.

The organization said that initial findings and post-mortem examinations indicate a pattern of severe abuse, including head injuries, internal bleeding, and broken ribs, as well as acute malnutrition and denial of life-saving care.

The report concluded by calling for an independent international investigation to determine the causes of death and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
