Kidney patients in Gaza issue a distress call
Kidney failure patients in the Gaza Strip issued an urgent appeal for help on Tuesday after dialysis sessions at Al-Shifa Hospital were reduced due to a shortage of supplies needed to operate the machines, a consequence of the Israeli blockade.
Patients held a sit-in protest inside the hospital, appealing to the World Health Organization and other relevant authorities for immediate intervention to provide the necessary medical supplies and fully operate the dialysis machines.
One of the patients, Wael Skeik, stated during the sit-in that patients are suffering immensely due to the severe shortage of sodium bicarbonate powder.
Sodium bicarbonate powder is essential for the operation of dialysis machines, and its shortage forces the reduction or complete cessation of treatment sessions, endangering the lives of patients who rely on regular dialysis.
Skeik called on the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization to provide this substance, warning that “otherwise, the lives of all patients will be at risk of death.”
He called on the international community to take urgent action to provide treatment and save their lives.
