New American aggression on southern Iran

US Air Force jets launched a series of airstrikes targeting areas in southern Iran on Tuesday, a new military escalation raising the level of tension in the Gulf region, following the American strike that targeted Larak Island on August 30.

Iranian television announced that explosions were heard in several areas in the south of the country, with Iranian media confirming the occurrence of “American aggression” on several areas in southern Iran. Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the strikes began at 12:00 PM Eastern Time, targeting sites belonging to the Revolutionary Guard, against the backdrop of recent attacks by the Guard on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and against US military personnel in the region.

Analysts believe that the American strikes come within the framework of Washington’s attempt to break Iranian control over the strait. However, direct military escalation may push Tehran to respond forcefully, increasing the likelihood of the crisis turning into an open regional war, at a time when global markets are awaiting any new development that could lead to a sharp rise in oil prices and increased instability in the region.
