Downing of a “Wing Loong 2” for the Tenth Time.. What Does It Reveal About the Development of Sana’a’s Air Defense Capabilities?

The announcement by the Sana’a forces of the downing of the tenth Saudi aircraft of the “Wing Loong 2” type since the start of the escalation between the two parties in the middle of last July represents a remarkable development in the aerial confrontation, especially since this aircraft is considered one of the most prominent drone reconnaissance and attack platforms, thanks to its ability to fly for long hours and carry out precise strikes.

The repetition of downing this type raises questions about the nature of its military capabilities, the importance of neutralizing it on the battlefield, and what that reveals about the development of the air defense capabilities of the Sana’a forces.

Exclusive — Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:

The Sana’a forces announced on Wednesday the downing of the aircraft over the airspace of Taiz Governorate, noting the use of an appropriate weapon in the operation.

A Multi-Mission Reconnaissance and Attack Platform

The “Wing Loong 2” is a Chinese-made drone, developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Company, and combines aerial reconnaissance and monitoring missions with the ability to carry out combat attacks, which makes it a multi-mission platform in military operations.

The aircraft enjoys advanced operational specifications; its length reaches about 11 meters, its height 4.1 meters, and its takeoff weight reaches about 4,200 kilograms, while its combat payload reaches about 480 kilograms.

Its maximum speed reaches about 370 kilometers per hour, its operational range reaches 1,500 kilometers, and it can stay in the air for a period reaching 32 continuous hours, which allows it to carry out long-term reconnaissance and monitoring missions.

Armament Capabilities and High Cost

On the armament level, the aircraft includes external hardpoints that allow it to carry air-to-ground anti-armor missiles, precision-guided munitions, and laser-guided bombs, which gives it the ability to target fixed and moving sites.

The estimated cost of a single aircraft ranges between one million and two million dollars.

What Does the Repetition of Its Downing Mean?

Observers and military analysts believe that the repetition of downing this type, if the details of the announced operations are confirmed, carries implications that go beyond the loss of an expensive aerial platform; as it indicates challenges facing the operation of the Saudi drones in the skies of the confrontation, and on the other hand sheds light on what the Sana’a forces announce regarding the growth of their capabilities to monitor and deal with aerial targets.

The importance of downing the “Wing Loong 2” lies in that it isn’t merely a reconnaissance aircraft, but a platform capable of providing field information and carrying out aerial strikes, which makes neutralizing it influential in the missions it performs.

Also, the repetition of downing it raises questions about the ability of the air defenses of Sana’a to continue dealing with this type of aircraft, and the extent of its reflection on the calculations of aerial deterrence in the course of the escalation.
