Washington is concerned about the expansion of Sana’a’s operations towards the Mediterranean
A senior US defense official stated that Yemen possesses weapons that can reach the Mediterranean Sea, lending some credibility to Yemen’s threats that it can expand its attacks on shipping beyond its direct borders, according to Bloomberg.
Follow-ups – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
The official, who requested anonymity to discuss private talks, said that the US government is concerned that Sanaa’s forces are capable of expanding the scope of their strikes on shipping beyond the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to the Mediterranean Sea.
The official further stated that the Houthis have advanced weaponry, and their use of anti-ship ballistic missiles is almost unprecedented.
The US agency confirms that this assessment comes at a time when defense officials from the US and the Gulf Cooperation Council are meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday. The US will seek to use this gathering to achieve further integration in air and missile defenses, including radar data sharing and the development of early warning capabilities.
