The European Union seeks Yemeni permission to withdraw its ship from the Red Sea

The European Union revealed on Wednesday its contacts with Yemen in an attempt to obtain permission to withdraw its most important ships that has been ablaze since the end of last week in the Red Sea.

Exclusive – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:

Diplomatic sources reported that the UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, discussed the issue of the ship flying the Greek flag, “SOUNION,” during his meeting with a delegation from Sana’a in the Sultanate of Oman.

The sources clarified that Grundberg requested Sana’a’s permission for the European force to withdraw the tanker “SOUNION.”

Grundberg confirmed on his social media page that he discussed de-escalation in Yemen, which also includes operations in the Red Sea.

Yemen announced last weekend that it had targeted the ship “SOUNION” in the Red Sea for violating the ban on navigation to Israeli ports. Media reports mentioned Yemeni forces setting it on fire.

Previously, the European Union military mission in the Red Sea, known as “Aspides” attempted to salvage the ship that has been on fire for days, but Yemeni forces reportedly warned off a French battleship and forced it to retreat.

In this context, Reuters reported the European mission obtaining the permission.

The British agency quoted its sources as saying that the European mission is preparing to take precautionary measures, including withdrawing the oil tanker “SOUNION.”
