The emptying of Gaza’s medicine warehouses threatens the lives of thousands of patients
Since Israel tightened its blockade on Gaza and almost completely closed the crossings on March 2, 2025, warehouses have been unable to receive any new shipments, whether of medicines or medical equipment.
Reports from human rights organizations such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicate that more than 70% of essential medicines are currently unavailable in Gaza, while hospitals suffer from a severe shortage of fuel needed to operate generators, leading to the closure of many vital departments such as intensive care and operating rooms.
The Ministry of Health has repeatedly warned that the continuation of this blockade threatens the complete collapse of the health system.
The Director General of Pharmaceutical Care at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Alaa Hillis, says that more than 37% of the list of essential medicines is unavailable in the Ministry of Health’s warehouses, in addition to a shortage of more than 59% in the list of medical consumables needed for all health services.
He adds that “this shortage directly impacts all medical specialties and services, including cancer and blood disease treatment,” indicating that more than 54% of the medications designated for these diseases are unavailable.
He points out that more than 24% of the medications needed for kidney dialysis patients are unavailable, while the Gaza Strip is experiencing a 23% shortage in the list of materials needed for surgical operations and intensive care.
