Supply shortages threaten to close charity kitchens in Gaza and halt free meals

Displaced grandmother Umm Mohammed al-Talalqa stood in line for five hours at a charity kitchen in the Nuseirat area of Gaza City to receive a single meal to feed her starving children and grandchildren.

But obtaining food may become more difficult. The charity kitchens, a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians since the outbreak of the war 18 months ago, may soon run out of meals to provide for those in need.

Several aid groups told Reuters that dozens of local charity kitchens are at risk of closing, possibly within days, unless aid is allowed into Gaza. Failure to do so would end the last sustainable source of meals for most of the 2.3 million population.
