Gaza Municipality warns: More than a quarter of a million tons of waste are piling up

The Gaza Municipality warned of the increasing disaster of waste accumulation, which exacerbates the city’s health and environmental conditions and creates a fertile environment for the spread of diseases, insects, and harmful rodents, posing a direct threat to the health and lives of citizens.

The municipality explained in a statement on Tuesday that the amount of waste accumulated in the city has exceeded a quarter of a million tons, under difficult conditions that hinder collection and transportation operations.

The municipality added that it is making significant efforts to mitigate the disaster by collecting the accumulated waste in temporary landfills within the city, in addition to carrying out initial collection operations and sweeping main streets.

In its statement, it indicated that the lack of resources, especially waste collection vehicles and fuel, and the occupation’s prevention of municipal crews from transporting waste to the main landfill in Juhar al-Dik, east of the city, further complicates the crisis.
