UNRWA calls for lifting the Israeli blockade on Gaza to address the famine and catastrophic humanitarian crisis
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) today called for the lifting of the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip and for its international staff to be allowed to provide support to Palestinians and address the catastrophic humanitarian crisis and famine in the Strip.
Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the Agency, said in a post on the X platform: “There is a rare and welcome momentum toward achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, paving the way for a long-term solution to end the decades-long conflict in the besieged Palestinian territory.”
Lazzarini noted that these developments represent a rare glimmer of hope that allows the United Nations and UNRWA to intervene to address the famine and suffering of more than two million people facing severe and dire humanitarian needs.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation forces have launched a comprehensive aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which has so far resulted in the deaths of 67,074 Palestinians and the injury of 169,430 others, amid extremely difficult humanitarian conditions resulting from the Israeli blockade imposed on the Strip.
