Targeting Gaza Police: Israeli Messages to Sow Discord and Reinforce the Status Quo

At a time of accelerating regional transformations and overlapping conflict fronts in the region, the Gaza Strip has once again become central to Israeli calculations.

With the recent increase in attacks targeting police officers in the Strip, political analysts are viewing these strikes as part of an Israeli attempt to reshape the security and political landscape in Gaza and send multiple messages, both to the Palestinian public and to resistance factions, amidst growing discussions about potential arrangements for the Strip’s future.

In this context, political analyst Alaa al-Rimawi believes that targeting police officers in Gaza cannot be interpreted as a limited security operation, but rather as part of an Israeli attempt to weaken the organizational structure that maintains a minimum level of public order within the Strip.

Al-Rimawi stated that through these attacks, Israel seeks to send a clear signal regarding the future of the Gaza front and to establish new rules of engagement with the Strip in the coming phase.

On Sunday evening, nine police officers and personnel were killed in an Israeli airstrike at the entrance to the town of al-Zawayda in the central Gaza Strip. This attack is not the first of its kind. Since the ceasefire went into effect last October, Israel has deliberately targeted Palestinian police, but these attacks have intensified recently.

Al-Rimawi added that targeting police officers carries implications that extend beyond the immediate security dimension. It aims to create chaos and confusion within Gazan society and undermine the cohesion that reflects a form of governance and organization in the Strip.
