The Gaza Municipality has established a waste sorting facility at the treatment plant in the Sheikh Ajlin neighborhood, south of the city. This initiative aims to reduce the amount of waste accumulating in the city center, utilize organic waste components for compost production, and control the rodent population through waste sorting.
The municipality explained that the facility is specifically designed for collecting and processing waste at its source. To this end, the municipality has prepared the site to receive the sorted waste.
The Mayor of Gaza, Dr. Yahya Al-Sarraj, along with several officials, inspected the facility, emphasizing that these efforts are intended to mitigate the waste accumulation crisis and reduce the spread of harmful insects and rodents.
The Gaza Municipality had previously warned of the ongoing insect and rodent infestation and its serious repercussions on the lives of residents.
The municipality reiterated its appeal to international organizations and the World Health Organization for an urgent response and the provision of emergency supplies, pesticides, and other necessary materials to combat the infestation. The municipality explained that the continuation of health and environmental crises in the city, the accumulation of large quantities of waste in the city center, the extensive destruction of infrastructure and facilities, the displacement crisis and the resulting severe overcrowding and deterioration of living spaces and tents, and the leakage of wastewater in the streets, all these factors combined have exacerbated the crisis.
