Warning of turning Gaza into a “genocide enclave”

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor warned that the Israeli occupation authorities are turning the Gaza Strip into a “genocide enclave,” imposing a tragic reality that surpasses even the infamous Srebrenica enclave in its severity and intensity. The Monitor emphasized that this systematic isolation aims to create the conditions for the expulsion of the population and to implement a forced displacement project under the misleading guise of “voluntary departure.” In a statement yesterday, the human rights organization explained that the occupation army is militarily re-engineering the Strip by imposing a blockade and forced internal isolation, having established direct control over 65% of Gaza’s total area. This amounts to an ongoing “illegal annexation” of territory by force of arms. The Monitor revealed shocking statistics reflecting the scale of the imposed overcrowding, where the remaining geographical space for 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza has been reduced to a mere 128 square kilometers. This area makes the current population density approximately 60 times greater than that of Srebrenica (during the Bosnian War and before the infamous massacre). He warned against the occupation’s attempts to expand its military control to 70% of the Gaza Strip, which would confine the population to a narrow area of no more than 109 square kilometers, resulting in a population density that would reach its highest level in history at 19,300 people per square kilometer. He emphasized that the remaining areas theoretically suitable for the population have been deliberately rendered uninhabitable due to the systematic and intensive destruction of infrastructure and the accumulation of millions of tons of rubble. He stated that the vast majority of residents currently live in dilapidated tents or crumbling buildings, amidst the constant risk of collapse and the spread of deadly epidemics and diseases. He considered this catastrophic reality to present the population with a harsh choice: “physical destruction or displacement,” stressing that these forced transfers are an extension of settler colonialism policies, as Israel seeks to market this crime internationally to gain recognition as a fait accompli.
