UN: 18,700 Palestinian children hospitalized due to malnutrition in the Gaza Strip
Data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicates that 60,000 people in the Gaza Strip have suffered from acute malnutrition since the beginning of this year, including 31% of children, equivalent to 18,741 children admitted to hospitals for treatment.
During the first days of June, 1,648 children were admitted to hospitals for treatment for acute malnutrition, including 17 children with severe complications who were admitted to “stabilization centers,” medical facilities that provide long-term care for the management of chronic conditions. Data published on the UN office’s website indicated that only four “stabilization centers” are currently operating in the Gaza Strip, including two in Khan Younis, one in Deir al-Balah, and one in northern Gaza.
The World Health Organization is currently working to establish an additional stabilization center at Al-Rantisi Specialized Pediatric Hospital in Gaza City, which will enable close monitoring of the nutritional status of hospitalized children and the identification and treatment of secondary malnutrition.
UN teams continue to distribute food aid within the Strip. During the first two weeks of June, approximately 15,000 children between the ages of six and 23 months received ready-to-use complementary foods, including 4,330 children in Gaza City and approximately 2,000 children in the north
