Tens of thousands of people, dressed in red, rallied in the streets of Amsterdam on Sunday to demand an end to the war in Gaza. Chanting slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “Stop the genocide” echoed throughout the capital.
Organizers of the initiative, titled “Red Line,” reported that some 250,000 people participated in the massive rally, which called on the Dutch government to take concrete action against Israel.
“I expect the government to impose sanctions on Israel, halt trade with it, and recognize the state of Palestine,” said artist Sebastiaan Bos, 68, who traveled from the south of the country to participate in the march. “I am deeply ashamed of our government’s position and what it is doing regarding what is happening in Gaza,” Bos added, wearing his red hat.
In mid-August, the Dutch parliament failed to reach a consensus on imposing new sanctions on Israel, prompting Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp to resign in protest at the ineffectiveness of the official position.
