UN rapporteur: Trump’s Gaza peace plan “the worst insult I’ve ever seen”

The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, described the Gaza peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump as “the worst insult I have seen in my life,” stressing that it lacks legal and moral legitimacy.

In an interview with the British newspaper iPepper, Albanese said, “I don’t trust this peace process because I don’t trust the people responsible for it. You can’t build a peace agreement on a violation of international law.”

She added that Israel does not want Palestinians in Gaza, noting that this position “has been clear for years,” and that describing the agreement as a “ceasefire” is misleading, because what is happening in Gaza is not a war between two states or armies, but rather an assault on an occupied people living in a ghetto since 1948.

The UN Special Rapporteur concluded by saying, “It is inconceivable that a state accused by two international tribunals of war crimes and genocide should be given the power to decide the future of the Palestinians.”

The UN rapporteur called on the international community to adhere to international law as the sole reference for achieving a just peace.
