United Nations: The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is not over yet

Three months after the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the United Nations and its partners have managed to deliver tons of humanitarian aid and carry out vital repairs to damaged infrastructure in the territory. However, this is only a temporary solution, according to Olga Cherevko of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). In a briefing to journalists in Jerusalem, Cherevko emphasized that “the humanitarian situation and the crisis in Gaza are far from over. For Palestinians in Gaza, life continues to be marked by displacement, trauma, uncertainty, and deprivation.”
This situation has been exacerbated by “frequent severe storms that not only destroy what little property people have left but are also deadly – whether through collapsing buildings or by claiming the lives of children who are particularly vulnerable to the cold.”
Ms. Cherevko added, “While this progress is evident, it remains fragile and could be reversed overnight, as airstrikes, shelling, and armed clashes continue, and civilian casualties are reported daily. Much of Gaza is devastated, and the needs far exceed our capacity to meet them.” She continued, saying: “Due to the various obstacles and restrictions imposed on organizations operating in Gaza and certain types of supplies that can be brought in, we have essentially only been able to put in place temporary solutions for a wound that can only be healed with proper care.”
