Childhood tragedy in Gaza: Hundreds of children missing under the rubble of a destroyed city
179
Childhood in the Gaza Strip has been transformed into a harsh tragedy by the Israeli war machine, where the dangers of relentless bombardment intertwine with the daily struggle for survival. The disappearance of children has become a constant possibility, creating a new and painful reality for many families in the Strip.
The Palestinian Center for Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons estimates that more than 2,900 children remain missing in Gaza, including approximately 2,700 who are still buried under the rubble.
Rescue teams face immense difficulties in recovering them due to the widespread destruction and ongoing bombardment, in addition to the Israeli occupation’s prevention of the entry of heavy equipment needed to remove debris and the shortage of fuel and engine oil.
According to the Center’s director, Nada Nabil, the number of missing persons in the Gaza Strip ranges between 7,000 and 8,000, including hundreds of children who disappeared under various circumstances.
Nabil points out that children have gone missing while performing tasks beyond their years due to famine and harsh conditions, such as searching for food or firewood for cooking or heating, or going to aid distribution points in dangerous areas under Israeli control. The destroyed homes have become mass graves, where the bodies of victims, including a number of children, remain trapped under the rubble for extended periods due to the lack of technical and logistical resources, a consequence of the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Under these circumstances, thousands of families in Gaza live in a state of perpetual waiting, where the hope of finding their missing children or their remains has become a series of unanswered questions.
