US Naval Institute: The aircraft carrier Bush avoided sailing through the Red Sea for fear of being targeted by the Houthis

The US Naval Institute revealed, on Tuesday, that the American aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush avoided sailing through the Red Sea for fear of being targeted by Sana’a forces “the Houthis.”

Exclusive Translation – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:

The institute stated, in a report published on its website, that the aircraft carrier Bush is currently positioned off the coast of Namibia, sailing around the African continent, and is scheduled to join a growing naval force in the Arabian Sea amidst an American blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

It noted that the “Bush” did not sail through the Strait of Gibraltar to the Mediterranean Sea, despite it being a typical crossing for carriers based on the East Coast heading to the Middle East.

It explained that the reason for “taking that route around Africa is that it allows the carrier and its accompanying ships to avoid crossing the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandeb, which were the focus of Houthi activity in their drone and missile attacks on American and commercial shipping in 2024 and 2025.”

The report indicated that “no American aircraft carrier has crossed Bab Al-Mandeb since the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) sailed through the strait in December 2023, shortly after the Houthis began their campaign of attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.”

It continued: “American destroyers that crossed Bab Al-Mandeb in recent years have been subjected to continuous attacks by Houthi forces.”
