Scmcha: The escalation of the repercussions of reducing aid and its impact on malnutrition cases in Yemen

Concerning the growing effects of the Saudi-Emirati coalition’s war on Yemen, the Supreme Council for Humanitarian Affairs and International Cooperation in Sana’a stated on Thursday that “malnutrition is placing Yemen’s children in the worst humanitarian suffering in the world, caused by aggression and blockade, teetering between life and death.”

In its statement, the Council explained that “the continued reduction of aid and the suspension of interventions to prevent malnutrition are among the main root causes of the rising cases of severe malnutrition,” emphasizing that malnutrition has become a real threat to children who already face the dangers of war and the reduction of aid.

The statement indicated that “4 million and 521 thousand and 727 children and women in Yemen suffer from acute, general, and severe malnutrition,” while “966 thousand and 881 pregnant and breastfeeding women are struggling with malnutrition to stay alive.”

The Supreme Council for Humanitarian Affairs stated that approximately 2.2 million children under the age of five require treatment for severe malnutrition, while the World Food Programme has halted malnutrition prevention interventions.

It further confirmed that over 8.5 million children face daily threats resulting from the continued reduction of aid, displacement, and the suspension of interventions to prevent malnutrition, emphasizing their need for humanitarian assistance. The statement explained that “among the most affected governorates are Hudaydah, Hajjah, Sa’ada, Raymah, and Taiz, which account for more than half of the cases of severe malnutrition.”
