Arming Saudi Arabia and threatening with the Houthis… American confusion due to the economic truce agreement in Yemen
The US began to exhibit an unusual state of confusion on Wednesday regarding the sudden announcement of the recent agreement between Sana’a and Riyadh.
Exclusive – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
American reactions varied between attempting to reassure Saudi Arabia by discussing the resumption of arming it and other responses to upgrading the classification of the Ansar Allah movement as a “foreign terrorist organization” to show a kind of flexibility in exchange for implementing Washington’s conditions.
The US Department of Defense and State hastened to speak about the Biden administration’s approval of a new arms shipment to Saudi Arabia, the largest and first of its kind since Joe Biden took office.
According to Bloomberg, citing the US Defense Department, the new shipment includes military logistical services for Saudi Arabia worth around $2.8 billion.
Although the US Defense Department did not clarify the details of the new deal.
The American discussions about the new deal for Saudi Arabia coincided with the threat of the American envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking, to upgrade the classification of the Ansar Allah movement from a “global terrorist organization” to a “foreign organization.” This move is an attempt by America to derail any negotiations or rapprochement with the movement, against which the US has waged economic, diplomatic, and military wars but failed to isolate.
US Representative to the Security Council Robert Wood affirmed his country’s opposition to any agreement in Yemen without meeting its conditions, which include stopping Yemeni operations against the occupation, releasing the spy network, in addition to calm by the Houthis, in reference to the lack of response to the recent Israeli aggression on Hudaydah.
The US Central Command also announced new airstrikes on Yemen.
These American contradictions indicate a state of confusion following the recent agreement announced by the UN envoy in Yemen, which included reducing economic escalation measures that America was pushing for to ignite a new war in the region. America relies on the new arms deal to change Saudi Arabia’s position regarding the agreement with Sana’a, especially after Biden’s statements saying that one of Saudi Arabia’s demands is protection from the Houthis. While considering classifying Ansar Allah as a “terrorist group” to block any new negotiations with Saudi Arabia, which may allow for greater progress in the future, especially in light of reports about preparations to begin implementing the UN roadmap, including humanitarian measures.
