The World Food Programme (WFP) reported that all bakeries in the central Gaza Strip had closed due to severe supply shortages. Bread is a lifeline for many families in Gaza and is often the only food available to them.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned of a deteriorating nutritional situation across Gaza. Two-thirds of children receiving treatment for acute malnutrition since the beginning of 2024 have been registered within the past five months, he said. UN partners reported that more than 3,400 children went for treatment for acute malnutrition between the first and twenty-third of this month.
Despite challenges faced by aid organizations in Gaza, WHO and its partner, Relief International, have set up a new acute malnutrition treatment centre in Deir al-Balah. This means that there are only four centers operating in this field throughout the Gaza Strip, one in Khan Younis, another in Gaza City and two in Deir al-Balah.The health sector faces shortages of medicines, equipment, fuel, food and water.
Despite the challenges, UN health partners have delivered supplies and worked to establish additional health points at displacement sites in Gaza City.
