Gaza Municipality warns of flooding large areas with rainwater
At these times, the municipality of Gaza City, the largest city in the Gaza Strip, fears a complete collapse in the infrastructure of the “Sheikh Radwan Pool” area, north of the city, where rainwater and sewage collect, as a result of the continuous Israeli bombardments.
Hosni Muhanna, spokesman for the municipality, said in a press statement that the Israeli bombardment of Sheikh Radwan Pool and the surrounding area led to the destruction of 4 out of 5 pumps in addition to backup generators, and pointed out that a “sudden concrete landing” occurred to the pool building, which threatens to stop the operation of the pumps and a complete collapse of the area.
Work inside the pond and its facilities “poses a danger to the lives of municipal workers because of fears of widening the subsidence and collapse”, he said.
The overflow of contaminated water from the pond “poses a drowning risk to surrounding residents”, he said.
He pointed out that the water level in the pond exceeded 6 meters, which exposes the surrounding areas to serious danger with the approach of the rainy season and air depressions, warning that the delay in repairing the damaged drainage line may lead to the flooding of homes and surrounding facilities as a result of water overflow.
