Piles of garbage threaten the lives of Gaza residents

The environmental tragedy of the Gaza Strip continues, due to the consequences of the Israeli war that destroyed the infrastructure and disrupted the services provided by the municipal authorities.
Collecting waste from the streets remains a serious problem that threatens the spread of diseases, due to the occupation preventing access to large landfills, where it is collected in temporary areas, and the lack of sufficient fuel for municipalities to operate waste collection vehicles.

The Gaza Municipality said that the continued accumulation of waste in the streets, especially in the temporary landfills that are spread in the area of Yarmouk Market and Firas Market in the center of Gaza City, since the beginning of the aggression on the Strip, “poses a direct threat to the health of citizens, and increases their daily suffering in light of the difficult humanitarian conditions.”

It indicated in a press statement that more than 170 thousand tons of waste accumulate in the streets, which leads to “serious environmental pollution and exposes citizens to the risk of diseases and epidemics.”

The municipality called on international organizations and institutions to intervene urgently and coordinate with the relevant authorities to allow access to the main landfill, in order to empty the waste in a safe manner, at a time when the city is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis.
