The UN envoy warns of the consequences of the American escalation in Yemen and hints at the fall of 4 governorates, re-presents the roadmap
The UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, revealed on Thursday the consequences of the latest American escalation in Yemen.
Exclusive – Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni:
This came in his first briefing after the Trump administration’s decision to designate the Ansar Allah movement, the largest Yemeni force, on the sanctions list.
In his speech at the UN Security Council session held this evening on Yemen, the UN envoy indicated that the American step is pushing towards further escalation, warning of its consequences.
The envoy hinted that 4 governorates, the most prominent of which are Marib, Al-Jawf, Taiz, and Shabwa, which are areas under the control of the factions loyal to the coalition, may fall, stressing the escalation of confrontations on their borders.
Although the envoy indicated that the repercussions of the American decision are not yet clear, he vowed to continue his efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement, calling for its protection.
Grundberg re-introduced the UN roadmap, which includes a permanent ceasefire nationwide and acceptance of settlements related to the economic situation, in addition to an inclusive political process that includes all Yemenis.
The Security Council had held its first session on Yemen in light of the American escalation.
The Council did not issue any statement on the situation, despite America’s attempt to defend its steps against those it described as “Houthis.”
The UN envoy is one of several international parties who had previously rejected the recent American steps against Yemen, most notably the UN Secretary-General, who, through a spokesman, affirmed the continuation of “saving lives.”
