The bread crisis in Gaza worsens with the closure of Kerem Shalom crossing

The bakery sector in Gaza is in danger of a complete shutdown in the coming days, as a result of the continued closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing, which is the only access to food supplies and fuel.

Abdul Nasser al–Ajrami, head of the Association of Bakeries in Gaza, stressed that the current crisis threatens the food security of the residents of the Gaza Strip, especially since bakeries rely on limited stocks of flour, yeast and basic materials, which are about to run out.

In a statement to the Palestinian Information Center, Al–Ajrami explained that five bakeries in Gaza have already stopped working, four of them in the Khan Yunis governorate in the southern Gaza Strip, and one bakery in the Bureij refugee camp in the middle of it.

The reason for the closure is due to the depletion of cooking gas, which some bakeries rely on to operate their ovens, in the absence of alternatives due to the severe restrictions imposed by the occupation.
