The United Nations condemns Israel’s efforts to separate the northern West Bank from its south

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday condemned Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and plans to separate its north from its south. He also condemned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s call to kill dozens of Palestinians in Gaza daily.

In a press briefing in New York on World Humanitarian Day, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said the Secretary-General is deeply concerned about Israeli settlement activity in the occupied West Bank, particularly proposals to expand the E1 area. He warned that such expansion could sever the northern West Bank from the south, threaten its territorial integrity, and pose an existential threat to the two-state solution. He called on Israel to halt these actions and abide by UN resolutions and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice issued in July 2024. Dujarric noted that Israeli military operations in Hebron and other areas include the deployment of snipers on rooftops and the prevention of some 40,000 people, including children, from leaving their homes, thus denying them access to essential services and workplaces. He said that seven Palestinian homes are being used as interrogation centers after families are detained inside, stressing the need for security operations to be conducted in accordance with international law and with respect for the dignity of civilians. The spokesperson also condemned the dangerous statements made by Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, in which he called for To the killing of “30 or 40 people” in Gaza every day.

Dujarric said these statements were outrageous, abhorrent, and dangerous, and dehumanizing, stressing that the United Nations condemns them unequivocally.
