“Systematic Crushing of Childhood”… Activists Comment on the Deepening Tragedy of Gaza’s Children
Websites are still brimming with interaction about the tragic conditions facing children in the Gaza Strip, which are inconsistent with their age and what they should be at this stage of their lives.
While children around the world are living normal lives, shifting between school, playing, and receiving healthcare and family support, the children of Gaza are facing conditions that no child could possibly cope with.
Children in Gaza are now forced to search for food and drink, and may be forced to carry their siblings, alive or dead, to escape death, or to search for a parent who may have been lost under the rubble of the war, through which Israel is attempting to destroy everything and all aspects of life.

Children represent up to half of the population of the Strip, more than a million children. In Gaza City alone, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says that nearly half a million of these children suffer from trauma, psychological distress, and face starvation.
Some, if not most, of these children are sometimes required to carry a bag of flour weighing more than themselves to feed their families, after many families lost their breadwinners during this war.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the Gaza Strip now houses 39,000 orphans, the largest orphan crisis in modern history.
When a child is injured in an Israeli bombardment, he or she cannot find a bed in the hospital, and even if he or she does find one, he or she cannot find treatment due to the shortage of medicines resulting from the total blockade imposed by the occupation.
